The information technology sector creates a tremendous amount of heat energy and consumes an incredible amount of energy in its operations. The systems used to initialize and transfer trillions of bytes of information give off an amazing amount of heat that has an indelible effect on the environment. One of the ways that the heat emissions can be cut is by designing power sources that use less energy and systems that require less electricity. Computer systems that operate on a lower level of power will automatically run more efficiently by creating less heat output. Green IT is the center of the effort to make energy conservation a focus of information technology.
Each company in information technology must set a goal for reducing energy consumption. One of the processes that is being considered is the purchasing of potential energy certificates. If the plan is put into operation, companies would have certificates of allowable energy use for a specific period of time. When they have used their allotted energy shares, they would purchase additional shares from another company that may not have used their entire allotment. Measures such as these can contribute significantly to accountability in energy consumption. Green IT must be an effort expressed by every segment of business, no matter what it is. Energy sources that are not renewable are also not inexhaustible. The carbon footprint that is being left by businesses throughout the world must be reduced. Information technology uses an incredible amount of energy and therefore affects the environment significantly.
Green IT sustainability is a huge concern in the effort to reduce energy consumption. It is not enough to talk about the problem and start a project focusing on the issue only to have it end within a few months. The effort must bring measurable results that are sustained in the long term. Environmental problems are not something that is going to be reduced by good intentions. The only efforts that will bring results are those that significantly reduce energy needs and the resulting emissions. If all of industry would tackle the problem as a combined effort the effect would be astounding.
If the world is going to last it is going to take Green IT combined with the work of every other part of industry to make it happen. In the environment we are seeing the results of centuries of careless waste. No one can afford for everyone to continue in the fast-paced consumption of every type of energy available. Each sector must do its part.
