Cyber Strategy

Information warfare is a serious threat for governments and many private companies, who face significant losses if they allow their data and sensitive information to leak into the wrong hands. Although protecting military and corporate secrets has always been important, the methods that have been used to keep sensitive information safe and secure have had to adapt to the new risks presented by computing and the internet.

The growth of computing has resulted in a dramatic increase in the amount of data that is produced and which can be copied or transferred. This information is at risk from very different types of theft and espionage than used to be a problem for information that was kept on paper. The larger amount of information and the new ways through which it can be accessed has made it increasingly difficult for information to be protected and kept secure.

A cyber strategy can help ensure that information is protected, but it can also involve offensive techniques as well as defensive ones. A good strategy will approach all aspects of protecting and using information.

Cyber security often focuses on the control of information and in restricting access to a limited number of people. It is also involved in creating secure systems and methods of communication that are protected against attacks of different types. Information needs to be transmitted correctly as well as securely. Message assuredness is about ensuring that data can be protected while still being available for use by the right users.

Information manipulation is a powerful method that can be used both offensively and defensively to control access to data and the release of information. Information gathering involves various types of research, which may include espionage, but which can also include open research.

In order to develop a successful cyber strategy, it is necessary to find the right hardware and software solutions. It is also essential to ensure that the system users are educated about cyber security so that they will follow the right procedures. A superb security system cannot keep information safe if it is not being used properly. The system users must approach security with the right mindset so that they can be aware of the risk of all types of security breaches, including inadvertent ones.

It is also important to be clear about the different levels of security that are required for different types of information. Some types of information need to be more carefully protected than others. The security measures that need to be taken for particular types of information must be made clear in order to avoid mistakes or confusion.

As cyber strategies are developed to cope with the risks posed to information that is held on computers or which may be accessed through networks, the technology, the security procedures and the legal implications of cyber security, espionage and warfare will also become clearer.
